Wins all round!
1st Team
Embsay’s visitors Newby Hall won the toss and choose to bat first at Shires Lane. The overnight rain had left a slightly damp wicket and after two overs they stood at 4-3 with Haroon Ali taking three wickets in the over. Sam Arkwright took a wicket then Haroon snaffled three more to leave they 41-7. Tom Robinson claimed the last two wickets to see them 49-9. They only had 10 men because their keeper had been involved in a traffic accident and couldn’t get to the ground in time to play. Thankfully he was not badly hurt. Haroon finished with 6-20, Tom 2-11 and Arkers 1-13.
Whilst their innings took 22.3 overs, ours was quite short at 6.5 overs.
Openers Joe Holt 22no (2×4 1×6) and Moshin Saghir 27no (4×4 1×6) knocking off the runs which saw us reap 20 points and consolidate out 4th position in the Division.
2nd Team
The 2nd XI travelled to Bishop Monkton and recorded a similar victory and get 20 points. They have a smashing set up which caters for cricket, football, tennis, bowls and croquet outside but with the village hall adjoining the pavilion, the village is well served for amenities.
Put in the homeside struggled from the start against 14-year-old Adam Harding and Gareth Wooler. They were 23-4 when Adam finished his spell of six overs three maidens ten runs and four wickets. Gareth had 0-12 off 5 overs. Skipper Paul Wormald entered the fray and stunned his own team by taking 4-13 which included the hat-trick. Caspar Bean claimed the 9th wicket at 29. At this point all the batsmen had been bowled. A bright partnership of 30 followed before Jago Bean had the last man stumped.
For us to collect the 20 points our openers had to knock off the runs and this they did in 15.3 overs. Caspar had 6×4 and 1×6 in his 46no and 13-year-old Thomas Mountain quietly about supporting Caspar to finish on 11no. We sit atop of Division 8.
Fixtures
This Saturday the 1st XI are at home to South Kilvington with the match ball sponsored by Andrew Bingham whilst the 2nd XI travel to play Thirsk 3rds who play at South Kilvington.
A note for the diary the 1st XI play their first cup game which at home to Helperby 2nd with a 6-30pm start.
The u11s played Wharfedale on Monday in a cup game and unexpectedly won by 5 runs! Batting first Jack Lovell scored 20 retired and Olive Ratcliffe 10 also 23 extras helped the cause. Their skipper had to retire on 20 and Joshua Green scored 17. They had reached thanks to two superb overs from Olive Ratcliffe, who finished with 3-3. However, she was bowled out and there were still two overs to go. No problems, Hugo Brookfield Ellison and Archie Ogden bowled maiden overs – despite the loud protestations of their skipper “to smash it” – and we had won by 5 runs. Their next game on the 11/5 is at home to Barnoldswick in the League, and they play them again on Monday 23rd May in the next round of the cup at Shires Lane.
