Individual awards:-
Bowling:– Significant improvements throughout the season. To give that some form of reference – in our first game there were a total of 17 wides – in our penultimate game we bowled 2.
Whilst the awards themselves are based on averages we had 6 players who took 5 wickets or more in the League. Henry Pighills and Rupert Smith took 5 wickets each, Adam Lovell took 7, Reece Jolly and Hugo Brookfield-Eddison 8 wickets each but the overall winner with the very impressive figures of 22 overs, 6 maidens, 10 wickets at an average of only 3.4 runs per wicket and a strike rate of a wicket every 13.20 balls – the under 11 captain for the season Olive Ratcliffe.
Batting – As with the bowling it was really good to see big improvements over the season and we even discovered that an off-side existed towards the end of the season. In terms of gross runs scored everyone contributed Reece Jolly 33; Archie Ogden 38; Billy Collins 41; Rupert Smith 47; Hugo Brookfield-Eddison 51; Olive Ratcliffe 61; Charlie Bean 63; Adam Lovell 73 and Jack Lovell 104. But the clear winner with 122 runs in the season being out only twice in the season so a gross average of 61 and a net average of 53 was Henry Pighills.
Merritt Trophy – Unlike the two individual awards this category was an extremely close thing and using a ranking system for gross runs scored and wickets taken we had 5 players in very close contention. Jack Lovell with 104 runs and 4 wickets, Hugo Brookfield-Eddison with 51 runs and 8 wickets; Henry Pighills with 122 runs and 5 wickets; Olive Ratcliffe with 61 runs and 10 wickets but the winner with 73 runs and 7 wickets it is one of the youngest members of our squad – Adam Lovell.
Fielding – Some great individual catches taken in the year including notable ones by Billy Collins, Olive Ratcliffe, Jack Lovell and Hugo Brookfield-Eddison but this award goes to somebody who will hopefully be a core player in next years Under 11 side. Despite being excellent in the field and also a very useful bowler, when the team required a wicket keeper, he was happy to volunteer for the good of the side and provided nonstop encouragement to all involved. The winner Archie Ogden.
Whilst the season has just finished, we turn our intentions to 2023. In addition to an under 11’s we would dearly like to run an under 13’s next year. A number of players left the club for this season because we didn’t have an under 13’s. We would like to ask those players to return to Embsay – and possibly bring some of their mates – so that we can continues to build our Club. Remember the invitation goes to girls as well as boys.
In closing the Club would like to thank Duncan and his assistants for all the hard work put in this year in bringing the team to runners up spot in the League and the semi finals of the Cup.
