Barrett Cup
On Tuesday evening the 1ST XI made the short journey down the A59 to take on local rivals, Bolton Abbey 1st XI, in the third round of the Barrett Cup in a 20 overs per side game.
On a beautiful sunny and warm evening with just a gentle breeze, they won the toss and decided to bat. They lost a wicket in the first over with the score on one. From there it was all down hill unfortunately. They lost wickets regularly with only P. Cockcroft, who made 25 including two fours and two sixes, offering much resistance. Extras (12) was the next highest scorer as all the other batsmen were dismissed in single figures with six of them failing to score. They were all out for 61 in the 16th over. The fielding was excellent – only one dropped catch – and the bowling was fast and accurate. Haroon Ali claimed four for 18, Struan Mackenzie 4 for 22 with Sam Arkwright and Jack Kitching getting a wicket apiece.
We lost a wicket at 7, with out of form Mo Saghir going for 5. Joe Holt also made 5. We were going along very nicely when Tom Stead was hit on the head, despite wearing a helmet. The ball lodged on the grill, and looked to have damaged his cheekbone and cut his forehead. In line with the new concussion regulations, Tom had to retire hurt. Tom Bailey joined Jack Kitching and the pair took the score to 61. “Kitch” was bowled for 12, having a mighty swipe to win the game! Tom Bailey hit the first ball of the 12th over for four and we had won by 7 wickets with Tom on 16 not out. So we are through to the semi-finals where we will play Rainton 1st XI at Shires Lane on Tuesday 27th June with a 6-30pm start.
