Embsay Cricket Club – Cup Match Report

Wath Cup Round 2

Having finally gone past round one at the fourth time of asking, we entertained Killinghall 2nds at the Billy Bob Ice Cream Parlour ground on Tuesday night. The competition is a 20/20 one.

We won the toss and decided to bat first. Gareth Wooler and Caspar Bean opened, and they made steady progress. They put on 98 for the first wicket where the latter was bowled for 31, in the 18th over. Sam Keane joined Gareth, and they took the score to 110 for 1 at the end of the 20th over. Gareth made 66, three fours and three sixes.

They never got to grips with things and slumped to 36 for 5 in the 10th over. 16-year-old Ben Jolly bowled superbly and at the end of his four over stint he had taken three wickets for two runs. The fifth wicket to fall was to a super piece of fielding by Sam, as he made a direct hit to run out the batter. They had a partnership of 32 for the sixth wicket. However, it had taken them seven overs. Just to make things more difficult for the visitors, the umpire had pinged one of their batsmen for running down the middle of the wicket and awarded us five penalty runs which pushed the target up to 115. Their innings closed on 84 for 7 with Caspar and Gareth both taking a wicket apiece.

Our “reward” is a semi final away to Spennithorne and Harmby, which is between Masham and Leyburn, on Tuesday 1st July.
