We have long been fans of BBC1’s “Countryfile” and usually settle down on a  Sunday evening to watch. Tom Heap is a regular on the programme so when the chance to see him at the Ilkley Literature Festival came up we jumped at it.

In his role as investigative journalist he has met many farmers, scientists, conservationists and gardeners around the country. He’s now written a book called “Landsmart: how to give people and nature the space to thrive.”

The book showcases people who are endeavouring to deliver all the needs of humanity and the natural world. Four pillars of wisdom prevail; Produce, Protect, Reduce and Restore. Land needs to be used for producing food, storing carbon, producing energy and welcoming nature and all are equally important. It’s an interesting and accessible book written in a personal, friendly style. I ordered my copy from North Yorkshire Libraries and was inspired by many of the ideas and debate between its covers. The impact of climate change is all around us so any solutions to its problems are worth taking on board.
