I have in the past admired the lovely flowers of Himalayan Balsam (Policemen’s helmets), which comes from Asia and usually grows by water, and enjoyed popping the seeds which burst open dramatically. Now I discover that this plant is a problematic invasive species and needs to be kept under control.

It forms dense stands on river banks that increases the likelihood of flooding, stops native plants from growing and negatively impacts other biodiversity. It draws pollinators away from native plants putting their pollination and reproduction in jeopardy. The plant can produce up to 800 seeds every year which travel by air and water. To control it we need to prevent the spread of this seed and remove existing plants.

The most effective method is cutting and hand pulling before the seeds are set. Early May, about now, is a good time to do it. The Environment Group are doing a survey of this species and hope to have a working party very soon to deal with it.  If you have any on your land please deal with its spread and if you see any in Embsay/Eastby please report it to the group.
