Update on application for 20mph speed limit signage only through Embsay & Eastby
You may recall that the Parish Council has submitted an application for a 20mph speed limit (signage only) through both villages. The application can be viewed below.
North Yorkshire Highways requirements for this to be implemented are for speed measurements to be obtained from key points along the routes. You may have noted that a series of ‘data tubes’ have been placed across nine key points identified by the Council. They will be there for a week or so.
In order to ‘qualify’ for a 20mph speed limit and have that signed the average speed across the data boxes must be less than but no more than 24mph. The theory being that if that speed is currently being exceeded but there have been no accidents or incidents then a 30mph limit is safe and there is no need to reduce the speed limit.
The North Yorkshire ‘20s Plenty’ Campaign, which is supported by the CounciI, recognises that 20mph speed limits through rural villages can only have limited monitoring by Police, but what it has proven to do is weigh on the conscience of the majority of drivers and they by and large comply – it has also been shown that those people who exceed the 30mph limits will continue to exceed the 20mph limits but at a lower, safer, speed.
It will be the intention of the Parish Council to continue supporting the Speedwatch team monitoring where 30mph limits still apply. In the meantime you can of course play your part in obtaining 20mph signage by driving across the data lines at no more than 24mph.
