Wath Cup 1st Round

Would it be third time lucky for the 2nd XI as they tried to get over the first-round hurdle. Sadly, it was not to be but we made a darn good effort before going down by two wickets with seven balls to go.

In a 16 over per side game skipper Wormald won the toss and elected to bat, and the start we made didn’t auger well as we slumped to 15 for 3 in the 6th over. Sam Keane was joined by youngster Thomas Mountain and the pair set rebuilding the innings. The score reached 56 where Sam fell for 32 with 12 overs gone. Jago Bean came next and the pair put on an unbeaten 41 for the fifth wicket. Thomas made 31 not out off 29 balls and Jago 15 not out off 12 balls. The innings closing on 97 for 4.

They lost a wicket to the first ball of the innings and another at 11. Then James Kempley took the score to 77 where he was fifth out in the 11th over. After that it was nip and tuck as they chased down our total. Caspar Bean took 2 for 18, Sam Keane 2 for 25, Paul Wormald 1 for 24 and Jago Bean 1 for 29.

This is not sour grapes but they did have three first-teamers in their side, including their opening bowler. Not the way Embsay like to play the game – all ours were regular second teamers!

Five games into the season and the 1st XI have their first win.

In the bottom of the table clash at Burnt Yates, skipper Morgan Davis won the toss and elected to field first. It was a wise decision as wickets tumbled at regular intervals as they were dismissed for 73. Haroon Ali was the star of the show claiming 6 for 14. Jack Kitching took 2 for 2 and Sam Arkwright 2 for 42. In fairness our batters just coped a little better as we lost seven wickets reaching our target, with opener Mohsin Sagar top scoring with 25. Sam and Haroon both made 10 not out. The 17 points claimed lifted us up the table one place to 10th. We leapfrogged Knaresborough Forest – whom we play this week at Shires Lane.

The 2nd XI entertained Wath and Melmerby 2nds at Shires Lane and similar to the first team asked the opposition to go first after winning the toss. It was looking to be the wrong decision as they raced to 83 without loss in 15 overs. In the next sixteen overs they lost seven wickets for the addition of 64 runs. Sadly, the ninth pair got away from us and they took the total to 183 for 8. Jago Bean, 4 for 29, and Josh Robinson, 4 for 40, did the damage with the ball. They finished their 10 over spells just as they were starting to put on the pressure. The last five overs putting on 30 runs. We opened up brightly with 51 for the first wicket fell – Josh Robinson going for 27. Two more wickets fell for four runs before Jago joined Thomas Mountain. The pair got the score to 100 where the latter went for 29. Jago went for 44 to leave us 122 for 6. The last four wickets fell for just twelve runs. We garnered seven bonus points and dropped from fourth to sixth in the table. We are nineteen points behind leaders Walton Park 2nds whom we play on Saturday.

The match sponsors for the first team game are Lettie and Brendan Keane and Ian Cranston Auto Technicians.

On Sunday the 1st XI entertain Arthington in the second round of the Atkinson-Swire cup.
