The state of our rivers

The “i” newspaper has been highlighting the shameful state of our rivers in the UK for some time. It has now come up with a manifesto in an effort to save them and is asking every political party to sign up. It outlines 5 pledges to force political action and stop our rivers being used as sewers.

1. Set targets to Improve River health
2. Cut Sewage spills
3. Tougher Watchdog (more funding for regulators to give them power to stop water companies putting profit first.)
4. Creation of many more bathing sites.
5. Responsible Farming (Farms funded to improve water quality and greater penalties for damage caused.)

This manifesto has been endorsed by countless environment groups. What can you do to help?

1. Write to local political candidates asking for support.
2. Write to local water company urging it to sign up to the pledges. (Yorkshire Water)
3. Share this information on social media and in your community.
