Nature Notes – Fantastic Fungi

We have been experiencing a wonderful autumn with the splendid colours of the trees changing over the weeks. It’s one of my favourite times of the year. I’ve also loved the amazing variety of fungi, which are also at their best, and marvel at the variety of shapes and forms. So often we see them broken, having been kicked as people pass by……but why?

Fungi have a vital role to play in nature. They break down dead matter, returning essential nutrients to the soil. Fungi help lock carbon away in the soil contributing to climate balance. Many plants from a symbiotic relationship with fungi that helps them absorb nutrients and water.

There are 2 to 3 million species of Fungi worldwide and roughly 15,000 are found in the UK. About 134 species are edible but we also have several deadly species and others that are mildly toxic.

It’s best to avoid eating them unless you are an expert. However, that doesn’t stop you appreciating their weird beauty and maybe trying to identify them. Can anyone see what these are in the photographs?
