St Mary’s wins national funding for its Cut the Carbon drive

St Mary’s Embsay with Eastby have been accepted as part of the match-funding scheme ‘Give to Go Green’.  This is a pilot initiative from the Church of England which is being trialled in 45 churches in the Diocese of Leeds, as well as churches in the Diocese of Exeter.   All donations made under the scheme between February 1st and March 14th, 2024, will be doubled.  This will give a valuable boost to the campaign to raise the £41,000 necessary for the new system. Donations must be made online to qualify for the match-funding.

The church in Embsay is planning to reduce carbon emissions by replacing the failing gas boiler system with under pew electric heating, which will ‘heat the people, not the space’.  A number of heaters were trialled over the winter, all the necessary authorisations are in place and once funds are secured, installation is planned to be ready for next winter.

St Mary’s, Embsay with Eastby, has an ambitious target to be Net Carbon Zero by 2025, with the wider Church of England aiming to be carbon zero by 2030.  The church in Embsay became the first church in the Diocese of Leeds to gain the Gold Eco Church Award in 2023.  Diana Linford, Parish Environment Officer, said: ‘We hope that our work in reducing our carbon emissions at St Mary’s will encourage us all, both individuals and other organisations, to try to reduce our own carbon footprints.’
