Embsay with Eastby Parish Council has submitted an application for 20mph signage to be put in place along the primary roads through both villages.

North Yorkshire County Council has previously been approached to approve 20mph speed limits in both urban and rural conurbations where it was evident that there is risk or record of accident. However they have refused to apply a ‘county-wide’ authorisation, but have indicated that applications should be made to Highways Area Offices where a need can be demonstrated.

Embsay and Eastby has a clean record of accidents reported to the Police, despite there being local knowledge of minor bumps and near-misses.

Nevertheless with over 100 new houses about to be occupied on Shires Lane, with an estimated further 250 vehicles travelling to and from those sites on a regular basis, it is anticipated that the risk of accident will be aggravated significantly for both pedestrians and bike riders as well as motorists.

Community Speed Watches have been regularly operated over the last few years, particularly on Skipton Road up to Bow Bridge, and despite having a speed limit reminder on that road from time to time between 3 and 6 vehicles have exceeded 35mph in every hour shift, and have been reported to the Police Traffic Bureau accordingly.

A copy of the 35 page application has been lodged with Embsay Library and is available for examination by residents. It identifies what are considered to be the higher risk situations and their proximity to each other. A download of the application is also attached below.
