A fine warm Saturday ensured that play was possible for the first time at Shires Lane (sponsored by Billy Bob’s Ice Cream Parlour)
1st XI
The 1st XI were at home and entertained Sessay III – a side who beat us three times last season! They went first and totalled 158 for 7 in their 40 overs. Sam Arkwright was the best bowler with 3 for 25 off his allotted 10 overs and Tom Robinson claimed 2 for 46. In reply we quickly found ourselves 7 for 2 after five overs. Andrew Foulds and Jack Kitching then put on 114 for the third wicket where the later perished for 28. Two runs later Andrew went for an 86 ball 83 which included 10 fours and two sixes. Haroon Ali and Sam both made 18 not out as we reached our target in the 34th over.
The first team garnered 18 points for their victory and sit third in the table just 3 points behind leaders Thornton-le-Moor.
2nd XI
At last, a game of cricket for the 2nd XI. They made the short journey to Ben Rhydding II. They won the toss and asked us to bat first. Nathan Barratt went for 3 with the score on 11. Rory Dollard went for 22 to leave us 53 for 2. Opener Gareth Wooler had spent an age to get going before the fluency of last season kicked in and he went to 51 (6×4 1×6) in 94 balls only to be bowled by their spinner with the score on 131. His partner in a stand of 78, Mark Walters followed at 137 having made 32. New recruit Maaz Nayyar was unfortunate to be run out for 13 – the bowler diverting the ball onto the stumps with Maaz stranded. This left us 157 for 7 in the 38th over. Skipper Paul Wormald 11 not out and Chris Stone 1 not out saw us reach 166 for 7 at end of our 40 overs. We were helped by 29 extras which included 20 wides! Our bowlers were always on top as they scratched their way to 126 all out in reply with us snaffling the last wicket in the 39th over to earn full bowling bonus points. Gareth finished with 4 for 22 off 5.1 overs and Maaz 3 for 35 off 10 overs. There was a tidy spell of bowling from 14-year-old Ben Jolly who finished with 1 for 12 off six overs.
The second team picked up 19 points for their win and sit in second spot 10 points behind leaders Whixley.
This Saturday the 1st XI are at home again, this time to Ripley 2nds. The match is sponsored by John Bowers Consultancy and Joanne Riley-Radcliffe (Prembiz Ltd)
The 2nd XI are on the road again this time at Little Ribston 1st XI.
UNDER 11’s
The juniors have played two matches so far this season and have won both games and sit in second spot behind Settle Gazelles. On Wednesday night they face Steeton U11’s at Shires Lane in the first round of their cup competition.
