VE Day Anniversary – The Embsay Song!

The Millholme Dixieland Jazz Band really enjoyed providing the music and celebrating with our neighbours at the village VE Day commemoration. Several people have asked about the Embsay song. The tune is Little Brown Jug, which was originally a 19th centaury drinking song but was made famous by the Glenn Millar Band in 1939.

Here are the lyrics to the Millholme Dixieland Jazz Band’s version.

LITTLE BROWN JUG
(FOR EMBSAY VE DAY)

Me and my wife live in the square
Near the Elm Tree Pub and Linda’s Hair
She loves gin and I love rum
And don’t we have a lot of fun!

Chorus
Ha, ha, ha, you and me
Little brown jug in old Embsay!
Ha, ha, ha, you and me
Little brown jug, don’t I love thee!

When I go walking up the Crag
Take my little brown jug in my kit bag;
At the top beneath a tree
O Little brown jug, ’tis you and me

Chorus:

On a warm day then I can have
Just a little cold beer down at the Cav
If I’m down to my last drop
There’s lots more at the Paper Shop

Chorus:

And so today we’ll raise a jug
And we’ll give our friends around a hug
We’re together in Embsay
To celebrate on V E Day

Chorus:
