Primary School Hedgehog Safety Project

The year 2 children at Embsay Primary School have been learning how to keep hedgehogs safe. You may have seen some of our posters dotted around the village. There are lots of top tips which we are hoping you may find useful. We have a had a very generous gift of a hedgehog house which is now in situ in our garden area. It looks very cosy. No signs yet but the children are sure they found some hedgehog poo on the grass nearby so fingers crossed.

How can we help Year2?

The children’s posters are packed full of useful information and look great too! Here’s how we can all join in and help our hogs.

It’s a busy time of year in our gardens, especially during holiday time when the weather is good. Hedgehogs love our gardens too and seek refuge and build their nests in overgrown areas, so extra care is needed when cutting back and especially when using strimmers. Here’s some top tips to help keep our local hogs safe.

Top tip number one lists the fantastic initiative to add your garden to the growing number of hedgehog highways being created in the UK. Providing a small hedgehog sized opening along your garden boundary helps keep our hogs off the roads as they forage for food at night.
