Embsay Cricket Club

The new cricket season is scheduled to start on the 20th April.

I say scheduled because due to the amount of rain that has fallen in March and early April, the ground is more like a “Paddy Field” than a cricket ground. Our poor groundsman is beside himself as he has not been able to do any work on the field so far. No mowing, no rolling, and nine days will be a tall order to get things ready.

Now in Division Two, the first team are due to entertain Thornton Wanless with the match ball sponsored by Paul Barwick. The second team whilst finishing in third place last season, have been promoted to Division Six. They are due to start their season away to Knaresborough Forest seconds.

At the present time we have no new players although there are a couple of irons in the fire.

On the junior front we have entered an under 13’s side into the UAJCA for this season. We are on the lookout for new players at this age and also with the under 11’s. Any one who fancies joining either of the age groups is asked to get in touch with either Mark Walters (07855 750273) or Duncan Bullough (07960 408178). Failing that turn up at the ground on practice nights. We are an English Cricket Board Clubmark Club which amongst other things means we are qualified to look after juniors. Our Child Safeguarding Officer is Duncan Bullough with Trevor and Ann Coe as deputies.

Whilst we have quite a number of match ball sponsors, we have space for some more. Any local business or individual who would like to help the Club are asked to get in touch with Trevor Coe (07932 468837 or 01535 667981) who will give you details of how to sponsor. The cost of the match ball is £30.

The Club has had to spend quite a bit to get ready for the season. Under League rules we have to have covers and hot water in the toilets. We have had to replace the practice mats and nets. We have had to make a space at the bottom of the field to store the covers when not in use. Along with other minor spendings we have had to spend just over £10,000 before we even start playing. Our next item on our wish list is a ride on mower – suitable to cut the outfield. “We would welcome a ‘sugar daddy’ who could make this happen sooner rather than later!”

Anyway it is onwards and upwards – let battle commence.
